Rocks have been around since the beginning of time

  • ROCKS TELL EARTH’S STORY

Rocks and minerals

Rocks and minerals are Earth’s building blocks and they are seriously interesting. My museum has a great collection and they give us insight into the Earth’s composition; both past and present.

Many people think rocks are boring…. wait until you see the amazing rocks in my museum! They are unbelievably beautiful!

I even have a Barberton greenstone belt rock which is the oldest exposed rock on Earth… about 3.85 million years old.

  • THE KALAHARI HAS AMAZING ROCKS

Kalahari Rocks

I have a big collection of rocks from the Kalahari. They are really beautiful and all so different. This Kalahari picture stone looks just like the Kalahari sand and dunes! It is a type of beige jasper that includes intricate black and brown veining.

I have a lot of different varieties of jasper and they are all really different.

  • FROM THE HEART OF A VOLCANO

Saltpeterskop Volcano rocks

Saltpeterskop is an extinct volcan just outside Sutherland in the Karoo, where SALT, the big telescope lives.

The volcano erupted with great force 66 million years ago. That means that the dinsaurs were still ruling Earth and had another one million years before they went extinct.

I have some great rocks from around the volcano, even a small piece of obsidian.

  • LOOKING DOWN

Rockhounds

I have a display of the rocks and crystals that you can find locally… if you look down. I hope that it encourages kids (and adults) who come to my museum to become rockhounds as it is a really great hobby.
